My Favorite Place to Travel (Poem)

My favorite place to travel
is deep inside my mind
Somewhere between reality
and a place I can't define

A place “not awake”
by normal terms
my awareness heightened
my body unturned

Floating opportunities,
a film so alive
it seems I'm a voyeur
within my own mind

Unable to define it
it expands beyond belief
I see no limitations
no walls, no rules, no reason

Magically this calm
in contrasting speeded state
rushes visions in my mind
at a bazaar, unfounded rate

Not sure its a vacation
or just restlessness at play
but it's addiction is irresistible
this contrasting world I stay

The horror seen in normal worlds
don't frighten me in this state
as I see beauty torn and eaten
as a way to repair, regenerate

Morphing fluid images
burning one into another
Words lost in days awake
flow out like no other

Curious the power
this place holds deep within my being
I feel the world I walk in
is so minuscule and unseeing

Thankful we are more
than our fragile daily lives
I live for the answers
where my REM sleep lies

Guitar for Charity - Almost finshed

The charity is Tidewater Arts Outreach http://www.twartsoutreach.org and this piece is specifically for the Singer Songwriter festival.

We have confirmed they will be exhibiting the instruments at NYFO in Norfolk, Va. two weeks prior to the Naro auction (Exhibit starting March 26). The actual auction will be held in the Naro Theater on the night of the big concert, Thursday, April 8 with Ben Taylor. Ben is the son of James Taylor and Carly Simon.

Should be lots of fun!

Did this illustration few years back when my life was changing so quickly my head was spinning. At the time, I felt more scared than I ever had in my life but also more alive. I faced my fears, my faults and reality head on and lived through it to become a better person. I found out if we don't push ourselves beyond what we think we can do and go for what we believe in and know is right, it might feel safer at the time but we would eventually die inside.

Life is too short not to seize each day and make it our own. Help others, tell people you care about what they mean to you, and make a difference in this world because you can. Push yourself like you only have a year left to make your dreams come true because you could have less.

Love this quote by JFK "One person can make a difference and everyone should try."

A Glimmer of Hope (for small works show)

Entry Title: “A Glimmer of Hope”

One of my favorite places to paint is Surrender Field in Yorktown, Virginia. I was drawn to this particular spot for some reason, unaware of its historical significance. When I stand overlooking the field, no matter how many times I go, I feel a calm come over me. The beauty seems surreal no matter what time of year I visit. The feeling of peacefulness that emanates from this area is extremely strong and feels almost as if something larger than life was born there and still remains present beyond the trees, fields and flowers.

Once I read more about the field’s history, I found it was the very spot the war ended and our freedom began. I believe this spot, in particular, holds a unique spiritual calm because so many were set free at once from the misery of war in this spot. With a heavy heart, I comprehend the necessity for war but celebrate with this place when man finds peace.

To me, it is a place that generates a feeling of peace and hope for new beginnings.

In the summer of 1781, after six years of war, the American Army was struggling. The British occupied New York City. A second British army lead by General Lord Cornwallis ravaged the South - capturing Charleston, Richmond, and apparently was heading for the Chesapeake Bay. Mutiny plagued the American army in New York and New Jersey.

There was a glimmer of hope, however. The French, allied with the Americans since 1778, had landed six thousand troops in Rhode Island while the French fleet gathered in the Caribbean preparing to do battle with the British. General George Washington and the French commander, Comte de Rochambeau, met in May 1781 to plan their strategy. Washington wanted to attack the British in New York City. Rochambeau, fearful of attacking such a well fortified position and lacking confidence in the Continental Army's abilities, recommended marching south to battle Cornwallis in Virginia.

Washington finally acquiesced to the French position and on August 22, the two armies began their march from White Plains, New York to Virginia arriving in early September. As the combined American and French armies marched south, a battle between the French and British fleets in the Chesapeake Bay sealed the fate of General Cornwallis and his British troops at Yorktown. In the period from September 5 - 9, the French surprised the British fleet at the mouth of the Chesapeake forcing the British navy to retreat to New York, leaving General
Cornwallis stranded.

After a five-day bombardment, the combined American and French forces attacked and overwhelmed Cornwallis's fortified position on the night of October 14. The British commander was left with no choice but to surrender, which he did on October 19. News of the surrender reached England on November 25 sending shock waves through the British government. Although King George III wanted to continue the battle, the surrender forced Prime Minister Lord North to resign in March 1782. His replacement began the peace process that culminated
in the signing of the Treaty of Paris in September 1783
granting independence to the American colonies.

October 19 happens to be the same date this painting is due for this show.
